Artist's Statement

Bill Mauldin, one of my most favorite editorial cartoonists, once said " If you see something big, hit it."

Poking Pomposity, whether a public figure in reality or an imaginary celebrity, is a source of inspiration and a sense of playfulness, that has been considered as an artistic license granted to an editorial cartoonist—the trickster who exploits the interdependence of word and picture.

And playfulness is at the very heart of creativity, once censor enters, the humor ceases. Thus, the artist who’s doing political drawings counts on the understanding and tolerance of a highly literate audience and editors!

LOOK, PAL ...HE AIN'T ALLAH! -- 注意，夥伴...他不是阿拉！

這幅時漫作於半年前( 4/22/2013)，當時連紐約編輯都看不出本圖所闡釋事件的深遠與未來的新聞性。

5個月後，就在9月下旬，非洲肯亞首都奈洛比(Nairobi)的大商場爆發恐怖攻擊事件，一個名為「青年黨」的組織挾持人質，濫殺無辜，擧世震憾。令人驚愕的是，恐怖份子裏竟有「美國人」--自明尼蘇達州被徵召的激進穆斯林青年。

在美國大學教書那幾年，接觸過不少穆斯林與東非學生，2001年9/11事件後，在社會與經濟的壓力下，無論男女，或多或少，均可見困頓，無所適從，甚至憤怒。對於這樣的學生，我總會特別關照他們的情緒，強調伊斯蘭藝術之美，以提振其民族自信。一點點的善意，總會得到誠摯的囘應。

全美各支派的伊斯蘭長老"伊瑪姆"(Imam)，也意識到地下激進組織的對穆斯林年輕人的邪惡吸引力，明尼蘇達州索馬利亞人的社區內，据聞有個挽救青年的組織，就名之為「走開」。

今 10/27/2013 讀到世界周刊的一篇文章"明州的索馬利亞人"，對在美國土生土長的穆斯林青年的心理轉折，有深入淺出的介紹，值得一讀。

Buffett Has Been Working On The Railroad!

我這圖作於1/18。

今除夕(1/22)上網找到了巴菲特在春晚的表演。有趣的是，我在漫畫裡稱他為"美國的這個老民工",結果他選的歌竟就是"I have been working on the railroad" （我一直在鐵路上工作）！

Simpson Rule vs. Buffett Rule

(新聞提要)

歐巴馬試圖以「巴菲特法則」(Buffett rule)缩減未來赤字，此法則之名得自億萬投資家華倫．巴菲特之名。股神巴菲特宣稱去年他的17.4%稅率比「我們辦公室其他任何20人所付的稅還低」是不公平的, 他還強調「億萬富豪通常付的稅比他們的秘書還低」。

共和黨人稱之為「階級戰爭」。歐巴馬則反駁道 “ Buffett tax is not class warfare, it’s math!”(巴菲特稅不是階級戰爭，而是算術!)。

剛查維基對河馬．辛普森(Homer Simpson）的描述如下:

「河馬是部分美國工人階級的典型代表：粗魯、超重、無能、心胸狹窄、笨拙、粗心與酗酒。儘管過著藍領般的日子，河馬卻有著許許多多不平凡的事。雖然他貪食、懶惰、常惹事故且非常愚蠢，但卻偶爾能展現出自身的才智與真實價值，譬如對自己家人的熱愛及保護。」

河馬衣服上的肖像是切．格瓦拉(Che Guevara)。我的圖完全是手工繪制，從不倚賴任何複印工具。如果你不識此大名頂頂的革命家，就自己找資料吧。

很意外地，在定此時漫的標題為“Simpson rule”之前，福至心靈順手google一下，發現竟然真有“Simpson’s rule”! 。這是個非常有趣的巧合，在畫時，我並不識這位也叫辛普森的數學奇才。

不管是「巴菲特法則」還是「辛普森法則」,就留給愛數學的你去傷腦筋吧！

辛普森法則（Simpson's rule）是一種數值積分方法，是以二次曲線逼近的方式取代矩形或梯形積分公式，以求得定積分的數值近似解。其近似值如下：

該方法係由英格蘭人湯馬士·辛普森所創立。

歐巴馬訪愛爾蘭，其座車（綽號" The Beast") 居然卡在一個矮不隆咚的門坎上，進退不得達十多分鐘！看到The Beast的表情，真的很糗!

記得電影《阿波羅》裡的那句"殺很大”的經典台詞嗎? "Houston, we have a problem...", 我想 the Beast 遭遇的問題應不下高科技的太空船在外太空故障。這麻煩很大條，發生在母親的國度，不可等閒小覷，所以歐巴馬應會向休士頓求救才對。

在歐洲行前，歐巴馬數度談話將歷來英美關係從"特別"（special)，改成"根本/重要/本質"(essential），曾引起歐美觀察家熱烈討論，多視此為美國日後會更加強與英國的合作關係，畢竟是血濃於水的同質文化。

大英女王和首相各別看到了The Beast 和歐巴馬遭受的吃力嚴重狀況，可是近水好像救不了遠火，打打英美傳統熱線，我想最後還得靠自救吧？
